With the likes of Marcus Intalex, Ramadanman, Claro Interlecto, 2562 and Redshape all playing at Cable’s opening weekend on May 21st-24th, Cable has issued a mission statement to London, calling lovers of late night epiphanies and homemade majesty to the dark recesses of London Bridge.

With its state of the art soundsystem, gritty brick arches and underground programming policy, Cable is set to be the place for enthusiasts of that rebel bass sound, and for Cable’s show on Friday 19th June, we’ve positioned two of our favourite promotions to kick things off. Each renowned for their connections in the bass community, and each with their own unique following, both Medium and Sin City are set to take things to the next level for their debut at Cable.

The brainchild of scene leaders Hatcha and N-Type, Sin City has represented the original south London dubplate sound across London, from the West End’s Bar Rumba to Shoreditch’s bass haven, Herbal. Bringing with them a line-up that spans both the first and second waves of the dubstep family, the re-launch sees the man who puts the ‘dub’ into ‘dubstep’, Mala, showcasing his hypnotic dub sound, plus the unforgettable riffs and perfectionist poroduction of partner in crime Coki. Anti Social Entertainment’s Quest and Silkie can be expected to build a set of deep, techy favourites, whilst The Others, having released on established labels like Tempa, Boka and Dub Police, can be assured to bring a tough stepping party sound. One of the scene’s first innovators Walsh can be assured to bring that real Croydon sound, whilst topping things off is none other than every dubstep fans favourite DJ Chef. A man who let’s his selection do the talking, Chef has been around since the very inception of the genre, and with his background in house, garage and jungle, his set will undoubtedly touch on all colours of the dubstep spectrum.

Room Two sees the talents of London drum and bass, techno and dubstep promoters Medium programme a line-up of producers and DJ’s that simultaneously takes on board the principles of early Detroit techno and classic Metalheadz output, whilst looking forward to the creation of a bright new future for UK bass music.

No U-Turn legend Fierce makes his début at Medium, showcasing the razor sharp rollers that have made his label Quarantine so respected in the scene. Leeds’s undisputed dubstep champion Pangaea and Ben UFO, representing the Hessle Audio sound to the fullest with their developing 2-step/techno angle creating some of the most exciting music to come out of the scene in recent years. Instra:Mental stand to lead drum and bass out of the darkness with their D-Town influenced 170 bpm wizardry, combining a keen eye for original samples with spacious production, whilst dubstep originator Jamie Vex’d will showcase the scope of his art with his recent work taking in a brighter, more colourful palette of sound. Slowing things down a little will be one of Burial’s favourite producers EL-B playing a classic garage set and airing his much lauded woodblock vibrations. Medium resident and Hot Flush signing Sigha will be lending support, along with FD and Tasha, tying the room together with a mixture of the best underground bass from across the board.

A brave new world of possibilities is out there for the bass scene, and the innovators are preparing. Get set set for fireworks at Cable this June.

On May 29th the clubbing landscape in London will be transformed forever. 3 underground institutions combine forces for the very first time to bring you a brand new night of monumental proportions. Wang, Split and Base will need no introductions to any Londoner with a penchant for quality underground electronic music, with over 3 decades of experience between them throwing some of the most forward thinking nights in the capital. By ‘clubbing’ together they feel they have managed to strike just the right ‘BALANCE’ and will be hosting a new bi-monthly night on the last Friday of every other month at uber-cool new venue CABLE in London Bridge.

Two Fingers and Sway return with the standout cut from their eponymous debut album, the brutal, beautiful, funny and threatening “That Girl” Telling the story of a girl who is herself brutal and beautiful (and not a little mad), this superb tune also features Sway-protegee, the folkabilly maniac Kevin Tuffy. Mixed down for the radio edit by Toddla T collaborator and former Fat Trucker Ross Orton, this Government of All The Talents have created pure fiscal stimulus for recessionary ears everywhere.

Two Fingers are Brazilian beat-adventurer Amon Tobin and Joe “Doubleclick” Chapman. The pair met when Tobin lived in Brighton and bonded over an interest in music that ran way beyond the boundaries of “electronica”. In Montreal they applied production techniques associated with UK styles like drum & bass to the template of hip hop. It was an experiment with explosive results. When MOBO-winner Sway (now signed to Akon’s Konvict label in the US) heard what was brewing he was so taken with it, he flew straight out to Montreal and recorded seven tracks with them, the pick of which was “That Girl”.

On “That Girl” Tobin and Chapman tie together a room-shaking drum break with cartoon guitar riffs and a sense of build you don’t often get in hip hop. Over, Sway drops lyrical gems about this “over-fine” girl and Tuffy rounds things out with a chorus that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Blur record. It’s a breath-taking combination, an adrenalin shot dropped in an alcopop.

Throw in a truly crazed, pedal-to-the-metal drum ‘n’ bass mix from Spor (not recommended listening for those already concerned about premature hair loss) and a bonkers happy-Sega mix from High Rankin and you have a fine package of musical treats. Everyone can approve. Maybe even that girl…

Rotherham art-rockers The Tivoli are a band used to hard work, fitting their legendary live performances and recording in between various day and night jobs. Graft and grit has seen the band build a rock solid regional fan base and produce “National Service“, an album that embraces politics, war, debt and the burden of mundane jobs without losing sight of more passionate issues: violence, sex, and heartbreak. Unafraid to address the burdens of modern life, The Tivoli also offer defiance through music, through knowing your roots and, most importantly, through knowing how to have a good time.

This defiance comes from working with and not against cultural change in modern Britain and The Tivoli sound is a testament to the diversity of British culture, even in its smaller industrial towns. The effect of dance music’s impact on England’s sonic landscape is expertly illustrated on “Pawns on the Fence” while “Ballad Of The Beauty Queen” swings like the bastard son of late 60’s Brit rock. The Tivoli are a band inspired by the terraces, by small town struggles and wage slavery – but they go beyond these issues by conscientiously engaging and incorporating with what it means to be a conscript in modern Britain.

Grotty, liquid, dark, brutal and lush are all words used to describe the music of 25 year-old Alex Melia aka Reso. Such a contrasting set of adjectives are hard to understand but after a listen to this EP and his other productions, you begin to understand why. A drummer at heart, these natural patterns of “skin hitting” are engrained within his brain and shine through on his digital programming and productions.

Reso’s aural identity is a densely layered, high octane tapestry, rich with musical texture and colour which really sets him apart from the minimal sparseness of many of his fellow producers. Mary Anne Hobbs has been a fervent supporter of the young producer, commissioning a special 20-minute mix for her Radio One Breezeblock show back in Jan 2007. Reso is certainly one of the most technically gifted producers to have sprouted from the dubstep scene and is fast gaining recognition from the techno, glitch and breaks scenes for his own twisted take on the dubstep sound.

This EP cements his stature in more than one genre. “Beats In The Basement” will undoubtedly be one of this years biggest dubstep releases; “Busted Crunk” is as crazy as it gets with its wonky rave style, and is very reminiscent of early Planet Mu releases but with a fresh twist; “TikTak” is a techno/glitch house assault which DJs will be tripping over themselves to play first; “Smash Yer Face In” does exactly what it says in a dubstep style; and finally “Identity (ID Remix)” has a definite nod to the old school with some very clever rave drum programming going on.

Reso’s previous release “If Ya Can’t Beat Em” was #1 in all dubstep and dance charts and “Heavy Arms EP” we know will do even more damage!

The amazing artwork for the EP has been designed by Terratag no less.
