We understand the need to bask in the glow of the Summer season, so for our August edition of Short Circuit we’re going to dig into our crates and pull out tracks that will inject so much sunshine into 12 Acklam Road you’ll think we’ve gone supernova. Probably a good idea to bring some shades then.

We wanna see as much summer-disco crossover madness as possible: you could come as Donna Summer or John Travolta in Speedos, bring a glitter beachball, turn up in a Larry Le-Ice Cream-Van, even turn up with DISCO sunburnt onto your chest… anything that conveys the true spirit of dancing in the sun.

And we must have been sitting out in the sun too long ‘cos we’re letting anyone who arrives before 11pm in for free. It’s midsummer madness!

With music spanning the furthest stretches of disco, house and techno, Short Circuit has become something of a legend in nightclubbing folk lore, and future Chaucers shall recount it over mugs of Twinings Chai tea in-between reruns of Taggart.

Sounding like DJ Gregory’s marching band heading through the back alleys of Brazil’s favelas, Township Funk is the master work of one South African, Mujava - real name Elvis Maswanganyi - a twenty something hailing from a Pretorian township called Attredgeville.

DJ Mujava’s formula on Township Funk is simple. It’s tough, dark, African dance music from the industrial city of Pretoria. It’s perhaps the most infectious dance record you’ll hear this year, echoing the early Warp sound of LFO or the Forgemasters in an uncanny way almost 20 years on, across continents.

Mujava’s break landed when taxi drivers - who act as independent grassroots music distributors in South Africa’s urban townships - started punting CDs of the music they’d heard him play on community radio across Pretoria that they’d acquired from begging visits to his house. Spreading his sound though their cab stereos, they started selling his music directly to their customers. His popularity grew and he was eventually signed to the well known Johnnesburg-based dance music label, Sheer Music. Up until now however, he’s not released anything outside of South Africa.

In the UK, Mujava was discovered by the good people at This Is Music Ltd, (home to Simian Mobile Disco, A-Trak, Frankmusik, Little Boots and current grindcore electro idol Fake Blood amongst others). Drawn to its simplicity, strange familiarity and catchiness, they first heard the track trawling through Youtube, where so far the video for the track has had almost 60,000 views. You’ll also hear Mujava on The Rapture’s forthcoming DJ Kicks compilation. Warp Records have signed the track outside of the UK and South Africa guaranteeing a heavy push worldwide.

Indeed, this beefy slice of post nu-rave kwaito funk would be equally at home on East London backrooms as it would be in the front room of a Pretorian shanty. Held together by an incessant wobbly synth line and backed up by the ever-present booty-shaking bass-line, this is instant hitting, maximum impact African techno. Ashley Beedle’s AfrikanZ on MarZ mix sprinkles a dose of big room magic on the original, beefing up the bass, adding jungle noises, crispening up the snares and bringing the dark pads to the fore, bringing the drama with them.

Altered Vibes return to Rocketscience with their latest offering I Know All The Bitches from the ever brilliant Mr. Beatnick feat Ahu.

Mr Beatnick is a busy man indeed, releasing on labels such as Far Out, Pulver, Foundations Music, as well as his own imprint Shhhhh. He writes for Shook magazine and contributes to Tony Nwachukwu’s Burntprogress project, a London based movement dedicated to new ideas and new artists in the making. He has supported Guilty Simpson, Percee P, Madlib, J Dilla, Seiji among others, and has remixed Azymuth, Arthur Verocai, Atjazz and Diamond D.

Thankfully in-between his busy schedule he made time to write this classic slice of beat heaven… and the result is awesome! With vocals from Ahu (the very same lady who works with the incredible Flying Lotus) and remixes from some of the hottest names around at the moment this promises to be a sure fire winner.

Bullion - the 22 year old beatmaker from Acton - steps up first working beats and melodies to devastating effect; AtJazz gives it the Innervisions twist, turning the track into an atmospheric club stomper; Simbad keeps it slow and moody with his own unique minimal twist; and if that wasn’t enough Mr. Paul White brings in an almost haunting element which is filled with emotion. And if that wasn’t enough to satisfy you, those lovely people at Altered Vibes have also given us an instrumental. What more could you ask for??

Mr. Beatnick receives regular support from Gilles Peterson, Domu, Toshio Matsuura, DJ Mitsu & Jazzy Sport crew, Charles Webster, Simon Harrison, Andrew Meza (BTS radio) to name a few, so if this is anything to go by then hold on to your hats as this one will be no different!!!

Son of Sound returns on his own imprint with the Trial By Fire EP – three tracks guaranteed to satisfy the nu-disco, electro and house massive.

Ever After Hours infects with an opening blast of Levan(ish) drum textures, synth-stabs and a post-disco groove that channels peak hour at the Paradise Garage. The drums continue to a build that segues a huge bassline and a dubbed-out frenzy carries you out into the morning.

The Yes & No is the answer when asked if it’s possible to cross Balearic elements with New York post-disco grit. The track delivers the percussive mid-tempo feel of a classic mid-80’s garage tune and all the melody of expressive Italo-disco. Percussive drum tracks, live bass-line and New-Wave style chant lay on a bed of expressive melody lines to complete this mid-tempo groove.

Did I Hear Movement? turns the tempo up with an electro-disco feel. The track delivers for the big and small rooms with its percussive drums, electro synth-base, mesmerizing chords and pulsating arpeggiator lines.

This EP definitely suites fans of Chicken Lips, Panthers, In Flagranti, Michoacan and Emperor Machine.

A French revolution is igniting across the channel, spearheaded by Paris upstarts Nelson who have been picked up Ctrl.Alt.Del Records. This band breezes into the summer with another fine slice of Indie-Pop-Rock’n’Roll.

Their music can be described as a cross between Joy Division, The Rapture, and Animal Collective. The band promise explosive performances where aggressive guitars compete with delicate electronic sounds.

Formed at an audio/visual school in Paris in late 2004, the quartet began regularly playing gigs around the capital before settling down to record their first EP Bangkok Riot, released in early 2007. The EP was met with rave reviews and it wasn’t long before they were back in the studio putting together their first album.

This band like to tinker with the arrangements without ever repressing their simplicity, a simplicity which cannot be overlooked! At times the group plays with the same passive aggression of an amplifier pushed to its max and then suddenly listeners experience chills as a keyboard is stroked ever so lightly. In effect, the very essence of these musicians haunts the electronic consonances which they use to construct a driving force that eventually plunges into outright obsession. Similar to Animal Collective, the group preys upon our nerves as Thomas Pirot beats his drums akin to an epileptic metronome. New Order and Notwist can also be heard through the distinct yelling of Gregory Kowalski, followed by the murmuring of JB Devay or the droning of David Nichols. When the music finally stops spinning around in our heads, we aren’t quite sure how Nelson managed to take us on a musical journey straight into their madness. That being said, it is not the least bit surprising to see the number of die hard fans increasing across France and England alike. Nelson will be on tour in June to promote their and in September 2008 to promote their album “Revolving Doors“.

This is 4 tracks of summer lushness; The Interpreter is heavy on the jazz influence but still very playable and accessible to the non-Jazzers out there. I Love You is a blissed out house number that will surely become a club staple for many a DJ, and with its Orb-esque bassline looks set to become an after-hours hit.

Meanwhile, on the flip Re-action is heavy on the breaks and samples and would not sound out of place on Wall Of Sound or Ninja. To end this package, Zombie picks up the tempo to make a sure fire club number. It has a lovely bassline, filtered horns and some well placed vocal snippets that we are sure will find favor on many a dance floor and radio show.

Saburuko’s debut on Integral records is something very special indeed. You just have to listen to Find A Lover (a take on the Roy Ayers‘ track of the same name) to see that they have hit a unique edge in D&B which music lovers can pick up on across the board. This release has been receiving recent support from Fabio, Marcus Intalex, D Bridge, Doc Scott to name but a few. Avec Moi on the flip takes it right back to the dancefloor with a grimey electro fuelled stomper.
