Roland Appel
TITLE: Talk To Your Angel / ARTIST: Roland Appel / LABEL: Sonar Kollektiv / RELEASE DATE: 16th June 2008 / CAT NO: SK188CD

Last year, Roland Appel’s “Dark Soldier” made a huge splash on club land – what started out as a secret hit at the 2007 Miami Winter Music Conference, found its way into the record bags of the likes of DJ Hell, Laurent Garnier, Pete Tong, Tiefschwarz and Gilles Peterson amongst others. Many UK publications even crowned it Track of the Month last summer – but this was to be just the beginning for Roland Appel.

Roland Appel is no newcomer to the world of music production. He started spinning records and producing music in the early 90s as a member of Fauna Flash with long-time partner and friend Christian Prommer. They made their name with 3 full-length albums, numerous 12“s, remixes and appearances on renowned labels such as Compost Records, G-Stone Recordings and !K7. Then they both teamed up with Peter Kruder to produce the sublime electronica of Voom:Voom. Roland‘s career reached a peak when he formed the band Trüby Trio with Rainer Trüby and Christian Prommer – their album “Elevator Music” was a huge success that successfully crossed the German broken beat and dance music scene. While Roland gained learned a lot from these team-projects, he felt a strong need to work on his own.

Talk To Your Angel is Roland Appel’s most intimate moment to date. “It’s all very pure and from the heart, which can feel strange when you are so used to working in teams” he reflects. The title also has a very personal meaning for him: “For me it’s an album of self-reflection: when you are working alone you sometimes want to talk to someone – but on the other hand you don’t want to talk to them, because you really enjoy being alone. It’s then that it becomes clear to you that you can talk to your angel”. For his debut he strove to find a new way of combining the rules of the dance floor with the feelings of a song. He delved deep into a wealth of diverse influences – Detroit techno, folk, soul, disco and house – to bring a sense of song structures to his music. For him there are no DJ tools and floor fillers on the album; each track is a proper song carrying a strong personal meaning, but with a very subtle house groove that will move your heart as well as your body.

The result is a consistently beautiful album featuring soothing atmospherics, dreamy pads, strings and voices, and irresistible house grooves. Talk To Your Angel will satisfy the most demanding deep-house lovers; moreover it will please all the music lovers interested in soulful music that tells a story and carries strong emotions. Talk To Your Angel includes the masterpiece “Dark Soldier”, as well as other great tracks such as “Changes”, “Unforgiven”, “Inner Soul” and “New Love” (chosen by Dennis Ferrer for his Mixmag mix).

Talk To Your Angel is an incredible debut solo album from one of the industry’s best kept secrets – listen to it and put your faith in Roland Appel.

SK Orchester
TITLE: Guaranteed Niceness / ARTIST: Sonar Kollektiv Orchester / LABEL: Sonar Kollektiv / RELEASE DATE: 26th May 2008 / CAT NO: SK170CD

Last year, Sonar Kollektiv reached the grand old age of 10 years old – an incredible achievement for an independent label. To celebrate this milestone, they’ve formed the Sonar Kollektiv Orchester – a super-group made up of 15 label artists and friends. Led by the extremely capable Volker Meitz, and consisting of 3 vocalists, 4 strings, 3 horns and a full rhythm section, the SKO is a collaborative tour de force. Volker himself is no stranger to the Sonar Kollektiv stable, having worked with Jazzanova, Clara Hill, as well as other respected artists such as Pat Appleton, Phonique, and Patrick Majer. A talented musician, he provides the arrangements you hear on the record, and plays keyboards in the live set-up.

Six of today’s finest singers make up the bands core vocal presence: Esther Cowens, Wilson Michaels, Georg Levin, Lisa Bassenge, Sascha Gottschalk and Clara Hill. Esther Cowens is already known for her own project Greenissimo, and has also sung for Sam Ragga Band and Jan Delay. Clara Hill needs little introduction: an essential member of the SK family, she released the album Folkwaves on the label last year to critical acclaim. Georg Levin has released a solo album on Sonar Kollektiv, as well as a brand new album as Wahoo (with Dixon) on Four Music. Sascha Gottschalk is the singer and songwriter of Thief (together with Jazzanova’s Stefan Leisering an Axel Reinemer). Lisa Bassenge was front woman for the Lisa Bassenge Trio and is part of Nylon and Micatone.

Caroline Siegers and Anja-Susann Hammer from the string section have both played on the aforementioned Clara Hill’s Folkwaves album, while their colleague Sibylle Strobel has played violin for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Grönemeyer, No Angels, Ronan Keating and Virginia Jetzt!

The SKO also boasts a full brass section thanks to Nikolaus Neuser, Dirk Steglich and Petra Krumphuber. Guitars are supplied by Kalle Kalima, who has played for Jimi Tenor as well as Jazzanova, Georg Levin and Thief, with Paul Kleber from Sonar Kollektiv. Micatone takes care of the bass grooves.

Last but by no means least, Rainer Winch and Philipp Kullen complete the rhythm section on drums and percussion respectively. All in all it’s a star studded line-up of some of the most highly skilled musicians around, resulting in an incredibly polished sound.

The album more than lives up to expectations, and such a creative new collaborative project is sure to be a must have for fans of the label, as well as being a great introduction for newcomers. Far from being just another “best of” or retrospective, “Guaranteed Niceness” celebrates the wealth of great music within the Sonar Kollektiv back catalogue while reworking them in the context of an orchestra.

Frost & Wagner

TITLE: Remixes / ARTIST: Frost & Wagner / LABEL: Sonar Kollektiv / RELEASE DATE: May 12th 2008 / CAT NO: SBCD0009

The love story between Adrian Wagner and reggae started at the tender age of 13, when he witnessed a concert from reggae legend Bob Marley on TV. It was his first big music experience, one that sparked a lifetime’s obsession that he has never looked back from since. Meanwhile, Oliver Frost discovered reggae through his love for ska – since both musical styles shared the same roots, he finally got hooked on the purity of reggae’s sound. The pair got to know each other in the Berlin reggae band Growing Tree in the late 80’s, with Frost on keys and Wagner on the drums. In these early years they refined their skills and learned how to incorporate and merge other influences and genres such as soul, jazz, dub and hip hop into their unique sound. They started to produce music as a duo in 2002, and thanks to Frost’s brother Barney Millah – one of Berlin’s most famous reggae DJs – they met up with Daniel Best, who promptly enrolled them in his Best Seven staple.

Besides their own music productions, Frost & Wagner have made a name for themselves as talented remixers. Whereas many artists and DJs would consider remixing a very purposive form of music production that aims to make people dance and sweat on the floors, Frost & Wagner see remixing as an art form in its own right. They relish using the input of other artists as a basis for a new song. From there they innovate, expressing their own creativity and offering a different perspective on the original tune. For Frost & Wagner there’s no rule to follow to make a good remix. Freedom of creation is the only thing that really matters.

Remixes starts off with Frost & Wagner’s remix of “Torch of Freedom”. Originally written by Cleveland Watkiss, and rearranged by Matthias Vogt’s jazz band project RE:JAZZ, Frost & Wagner transform it into a wonderful slice of jazz-roots reggae featuring the lovely voice of soul diva Joy Denalane. This is followed by a remix of Eva Be’s “She Walks Alone”, which highlights the sweet vocals of Pegah Ferydoni and gives the song a new intensity.

Their remix of Taxi’s “A Certain Something” highlights the charming voice of singer Jo Laundy, with laid-back drum parts and beautiful strings arrangements. Supporting the male vocalists are remixes of Tosca’s “Superrob”, Ben Westbeech’s “So Good Today”, Kabuki’s “Speed Of Sound” and Jan Delay’s “Klar”. From Deyampert’s “The Sweetest Delusion” to Onejiru’s “We Carry On” and over to Matthias Vogt Trio’s “The Look Into Your Eyes”, Frost & Wagner’s remixes have that compelling, feel-good feeling that makes you want to dance. The crowning glory for Berlin’s reggae duo comes with their soothing, atmospheric remix of “Everything”, from Sonar Kollektiv’s own Clara Hill’s Folkwaves.

Frost & Wagner will show you that remixing can be a wonderful artform, and with Remixes, Best Seven once again serve up eleven fragments of dubby heaven.

This month they welcome a very special guest from Frankfurt in Gerd Janson from Running Back Records to launch the second instalment of his superb “Computer Incarnations for World Peace” compilation on Sonar Kollektiv.

Following the success of the previous instalment of the series which focussed on the early 80s, this second episode shows the recent evolution of disco music, with thirteen tracks from artists and producers, who have injected some new blood into the veins of a genre that deserted the dance floors in the 90s. The compilation also features rare, treasured and unreleased tracks that you’ll never find anywhere else, from artists at the origin of the recent disco renewal. Artists such as Todd Terje, Prins Thomas, Lexx, Ray Mang, Mudd, Chateau Flight, Frontera and Rollmottle.

Gerd Janson made a name for himself as a DJ playing at Frankfurt’s institutional club “Robert Johnson” over the past few years, and as a music journalist writing for music magazines such as Groove and Spex amongst others. Supporting Gerd Janson tonight will be Ali Tillett and Leigh Chapman from Warm, who will be laying down their sublime sound scape of dub, reggae, disco, balearica and house to accompany Gerd Janson‘s own special selection.

A New Monthly Night At Cargo – Presented And Compiled by Karen P
Karen P Presents… Broad Casting

Inspired by a series of fantastic compilations on Sonar Kollektiv; a new night is born!

Karen P has had a huge impact on the world of radio and provided a much-needed platform to an incredibly talented pool of musicians and performers from all over the world. From her work with Gilles Peterson on Worldwide to the creation and production of the groundbreaking underground radio station, Red Bull Music Academy Radio – and now her string of excitingly fresh podcasts, she is undoubtedly a hugely influential tastemaker in the scene. The Observer recently hand-picked Karen as one of the brightest and best rising stars in her field by naming her in the Top 10 of the media category for the ‘Future 500’, recognising the movers and shakers of the future.

Tonight we celebrate the launch of her new monthly night with a little tribute to Peacefrog Records (www.peacefrog.com), responsible for hundreds of stand-out releases scaling many genres. We present two exclusive performances representing their past and present, showing just how much they have achieved in their 17 years.

LITTLE DRAGON – LIVE / SWEDEN

All the way from Sweden and already making waves with their excellent self-titled debut album, Little Dragon pay an exclusive visit to the UK. Fresh from a tour with Jose Gonzalez, they bring a similar approach to their music as their compatriot and label-mate, offering up compelling, wintry melodies that soothe, bewitch and beguile.

CHARLES WEBSTER – LIVE LAPTOP SET

Now into his second decade as a true innovator in the electronic music scene, Charles Webster (Miso/Peacefrog) is one of the few real mould-breakers in an increasingly stale & predictable dance music world (though whether a man whose favourite artist is Rickie Lee Jones, and whose records ooze such soul and depth should really ever be pigeonholed as dance is another debate). Charles has sold over 100,000 albums without ever being considered ‘mainstream’ or having had a major hit single. For the opening night of Karen P presents… Broad Casting, Charles Webster has prepared a special laptop set with some very special guests. Expect the unexpected!

Broad Casting To Broadcast on RBMA Radio

The Broad Casting night will be recorded especially for Red Bull Music Academy Radio. It will fit snugly amongst an archive of music from the most iconoclastic DJs & musicians of our time. “Do You Overstand?!” – Sonar Kollektiv (Sonar Kollektiv) [ALBUM] December 12, 2007

Soulphiction Packshot

TITLE: Do You Overstand?! / ARTIST: Soulphiction / LABEL: Sonar Kollektiv / RELEASE DATE: TBC 2008 / CAT NO: SK180CD

Following on from his 2006 album State Of Euphoria, Soulphiction (aka Jackmate aka Michel Baumann) returns with a fresh new album on Sonar Kollektiv. As well as having releases on Sonar Kollektiv and his own labels Philpot and Phil E, he has put records out on Perlon, Playhouse, Moon Harbour, Liebe/Detail, DIY, Mule, Resopal and Freude am Tanzen. He has remixed DJ Koze, International Pony, Dapayk & Padberg, Egoexpress, Move D, Solomun and Eva Be amongst others, and recently featured on the Sonar Kollektiv anniversary compilation Ten Years Who Cares?

Album opener “Chevy Estate” features gently plucked harp strings and the luscious voice of Suzana Rozkosny, who also sang throughout the last Soulphiction album State Of Euphoria. Her voice has a distinctive soulful sound that really brings the tune alive. “Ghana Wadada” is a dark dance-floor romp complete with haunting flute melodies and ethnic vocals. “Prison Song” features Marcin Öz aka Berlin’s DJ Highfish, bassist for dance act Whitest Boy Alive. The track mingles live bass with simple percussion to give this tune its mighty groove. “Velveteens” is a stomping dance floor number – its sound is deliciously raw, a long way from many of the over-polished productions one hears played out in clubs these days.

Soulphiction remains true to his name, putting as much heart and soul into his music as he can. Each track tells a story that carries the listener along, taking the album in different musical directions as it goes – so while “Cargo” is a pure swinging jazz number with an infectious shuffle beat, he throws in some spaced-out synth sounds to give it that other-worldly feel. “Soul Print” makes clever use of some TV western samples, held together with some able acoustic guitar strumming… In fact, Soulphiction takes in so many influences and spans so many genres it’s pretty much impossible to classify him. He knows full well that it can be boring to do something that can be too obviously categorised. You never quite know what you’re gonna get – the penultimate track “I Just Wait” presents yet another shift with its twisted hip-hop.

While his Jackmate project focuses mainly on straight beats and functional house, Soulphiction takes in influences from hip-hop and jazz, resulting in a truly experimental feel. There’s a great roughness to his sound, which is never too clean. Each production is restrained and minimal in the right way – he doesn’t let things get too complicated.

Do You Overstand?! encompasses such an eclectic cross-section of so many styles that it is simply impossible to pigeon-hole the Soulphiction sound – a true fusion of every genre imaginable.

2Bof4 Packshot

TITLE: Junkyard Gods / ARTIST: Two Banks of Four / LABEL: Sonar Kollektiv / RELEASE DATE: TBC 2008 / CAT NO: SK182CD

Two Banks of Four are producers Robert Gallagher a.k.a. Early Zinger & Dilip Harris a.k.a. Demus, two friends who have a long-standing passion of music, denim and Soviet constructivist design. Zinger was a former member of nu-jazz collective Galliano, who rode the wave of Gilles Peterson’s wonderful Talkin’ Loud label in the 90s, and more recently the force behind the many moods of Early Zinger, whose reggae rockers cover of Blur’s “Song Two” was an underground hit on his own Red Egyptian label. Demus is a very respected London producer whose work includes the Young Disciples‘ debut LP, Ig Culture, Zero 7 and founding the Co-Op club.

It all started in 1997 in an unheated flat in West London. The first few sessions were interrupted by power cuts and the heavy noise of trains leaving the city. They enrolled Valerie Etienne (former Galliano stalwart and recording artist in her own right) to become the leader of the vocal troupe, and she promptly recruited Paul Jason Fredericks and Bembe Segue to create a powerful trio of voices who would command the front of any stage. Their first long player, City Watching, received props from the likes of Gilles Peterson and Jazzanova, and was remixed by class-A music producers such as Herbert and Derrick L. Carter. The critically acclaimed second album, Three Street Worlds, came out 3 years later on Red Egyptian Jazz. During this time, Valerie Etienne and Zinger got to know the Jazzanova crew, and sang on “Mwela Mwela (Here I Am)” from Jazzanova’s illustrious In Between album. They became good friends and it seemed natural that they should release their 3rd album on Jazzanova’s Sonar Kollektiv imprint.

Junkyard Gods is an epic tour de force that cruises effortlessly through the twisted labyrinth of modern music genres – from soul to funk over to house and broken beat. Demus and Zinger put the emphasis on interaction and improvisation between all the musicians involved in the project, peppering it with their own electronic experimentations. This mix of influences, individual ideas and collective thinking is centred by Valerie Etienne, whose presence shines through the record from beginning to end. The whole album is a wonderful journey made of quirky electronic beats and sounds, flute solos, saxophone, trumpet and piano, strangely chaotic harmonies and intricate drumming sequences. It’s easy to listen to, yet extremely rich and complex in its structure, with uplifting and energetic tracks such as “Paper Planes” and “Flags and Words” that could easily make it into the box of many a club DJ, poppy numbers like “Dead Afternoons” and “Queen of Crows”, and more experimental tracks such as “Wake Me 5.30” and “Go”, where electronic beats and layers of warped, dirty synths challenge musical logic.

Junkyards Gods will teleport you kicking and screaming into another dimension of music. With Demus and Zinger as your space-captains and Valerie Etienne as your personal hostess, you can be sure you’ll be taken on a trip that you’ve never heard before.

“…mixing” – 4hero (Sonar Kollektiv) [ALBUM] November 20, 2007

4hero Packshot

TITLE: …mixing / ARTIST: 4hero / LABEL: Sonar Kollektiv / RELEASE DATE: TBC March 2008 / CAT NO: SK176CD

With the outstanding success of the two first “…mixing” compilations from Jazzanova and Âme, it would be a hard task finding the next artist that could bring something special for the third in the series, and keep raising the bar – enter Dennis McFarlane (aka Dego) of 4hero.

With his partner Mark Clair (aka Marc Mac), 4hero have changed the face of music and made a huge contribution to dance culture. They were regarded as pioneers of jungle and drum‘n’bass after their first album “In Rough Territory”, and haven’t stopped innovating since. In more than 20 years they have released 6 albums and set up 5 different labels: Reinforced, Raw Canvas, 2000 Black, Omniverse and Twisted Funk. Their album “Parallel Universe” was named NME Album of the Year, and “2 Pages” (released on Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label) was nominated for a Mercury Prize Award, and won them a MOBO Award in 2001. They recently released “Play With The Changes” on their own Raw Canvas label, which received a critical acclaim in UK.

On “…mixing”, 4hero investigate their musical influences; past, present and future. Things start off on a funky note with Bootsy Collins (who played earlier on in his career in James Brown’s band) and the infectious P-funk of “Fat Cat”. Detroit hip hop is covered with the incredible “Game Over” and the inimitable J Dilla’s “Over The Breaks”, taken from his legendary posthumous album The Shining. Then it’s back in time with the electronic music of composer and inventor Raymond Scott, regarded by many as a major influence for musicians such as Robert Moog, Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada. This childish atmosphere is broken with the disco-funk of “High Noon” by Two Sisters from the Carrere imprint of 1983, made of analogue drum beats and keyboard sounds. This is followed nicely with the soulful voice of Face and the break beats of “Act Like All Is Right”.

The second part of the mix begins with the exceptional roots-reggae sounds of Jamaican dub mixer Scientist aka Hopeton Brown. “Blood on his Lips” is a slow instrumental tune with a fat drum beat giving the pace, choppy guitar riffs and some nice guiro sounds in a pure roots-reggae style. For “Roots Dub”, The Skatelites make great use of their studio effects, with echoes on trumpet, flute and guitar riffs, creating a special sound that had influenced every reggae, dub and broken beat artist since. Once again, Dego switches styles with the wonderful voices of disco legend Patrice Rushen with “Message In The Music” and Georgia Anne Muldrow with “Blackman”.

Sa-Ra’s remix of Roy Hargrove’s “On The One” is modern soul at its finest, before the compilation ends with the calm and dubby hip hop of “Nighttime Maneuvers” by Little Brother, and “Make Doe” by Detroit producer Waajeed, a brand-new anthem from Fat City records.

From new to old Dego teaches us that Black music is constantly innovating but never forgetful of its roots. If you want proof that Black music is always evolving, look no further than 4hero…mixing”.
