Cookin’ on 3 Burners Packshot

TITLE: Baked, Broiled & Fried / ARTIST: Cookin’ On 3 Burners / LABEL: Freestyle / RELEASE DATE: 22nd October / CAT NO: FSRCD026

Cookin’ On 3 Burners are Australia’s foremost organ trio – connecting the dots between funk, soul, boogaloo & jazz. Long time partners Lance Ferguson (guitar), Ivan Khatchoyan (drums) and Jake Mason (organ) have taken their homemade brew of soulful Hammond “get-down” music everywhere from national jazz festivals to after-hours bars and clubs. With their releases receiving acclaim from international DJ’s, jazz critics and fans alike, Cookin’ on 3 Burners continue to deliver upfront funk dishes with a “back home” flavour… fresh sounds to make you shake your peas and gravy.

Having played guitar with artists including Joe Bataan, Alice Russell, Mark de Clive-Lowe, The Quantic Soul Orchestra, Bembe Segue and Los Cabrones, as well as leading the world beating The Bamboos, Lance Fergusson is arguably Australia’s answer to Will Holland (aka Quantic). Drummer Ivan Khatchoyan was born in Montreal, Canada but moved to Melbourne in 1990 and is a permanent fixture on the city’s jazz and funk scene. He is also a member of popular Australian hip hop group True Live. After hearing a beaten up Hammond organ for the first time in his late teens, Jake has been an organ disciple ever since. With more than a nudge from the 50’s & 60’s organ heritage, he has also branded a jazz and funk style of his own.

The band came back to prominence late 2005 with their 12” “Cressy St. Breakdown” on Knowfoowl Music which was followed by three 7” singles with influential UK label Freestyle Records. The single received strong airplay from all stations and went on to be featured on the “Stay on the Groove“, “I’m Staying Home” and “Nova Soul III” compilations. In 2006 the band supported Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings in Sydney, played at the Red Bull Academy 06 in Melbourne, jammed live with Breakestra in Melbourne and played countless other shows across Australia.

2007 sees Cookin’ On 3 Burners at their most ambitious. With the worldwide release of their new album “Baked, Broiled & Fried” through Freestyle Records, the band look set to dominate the funk-soul spectrum once again. The album features a number of vocal cuts akin to Sharon Jones’s style as well as previously released vinyl-only singles and a cover of Gorillaz’ “Feel Good Inc“.
