“Set Yourself On Fire” – Envy (Stop/Start) [ALBUM] August 28, 2009Posted by rocketsciencemedia in Press Releases.
** PLEASE NOTE: ALBUM ARTWORK WILL CHANGE **
Envy is 20 year old Nicola Varley, a kinetic MC from the UK’s rainy city, Manchester. Envy waxes lyrical over the cool, smoky beats of Medasyn (aka multitalented Nonclassical label head Gabriel Prokofiev), with a bold, unhurried flow that smacks of future stardom. Writing song lyrics for singers at the age of 12, it wasn’t until the age of 15 that she developed an interest in hip-hop and decided to put her lyrics to use over rap beats. Influenced by artists such as Nas, TLC, Missy Elliot and Ms Dynamite, Envy developed a passion for rapping and began playing around with her flow developing her unique and original sound with every new track.
Her music profile was raised through involvement in numerous rap battles that took place in and around Manchester. Winning the acclaimed freestyle competition Battlescars in March 2006 brought Envy both respect and publicity, and led to an entry into the Scribblejam Qualifiers which featured some of the best battlers in the UK, followed by an invite to open the MOBO awards 2006. Envy stormed a string of gigs in Germany, London and her hometown, supporting 50 Cent’s G-Unit in November 2007 to promote the impossibly quick “Tongue Twister” single. She has also supported Kano as part of his Home Sweet Home tour performing in front of thousands.
Her lyrics are cheekily smart, with the wry, pithy intelligence of the media-savvy. She raps in rapid-fire mode over bubblicious grime rhythms, at once both fierce yet witty, her staccato delivery popping in time to the buzzing, fizzing synth beat. So rhythmic is her phrasing that it would sound good a cappella, though conversely if you remove her rhymes you still have pristine, future-perfect electro-pop of Medasyn.
Already much hyped by critics nationwide, Envy is ready to set the grime world on fire…
“It’s the divine coincidence between Envy’s brain-jangling lyrics, delivered with a dizzying fluidity, and the gorgeous texture of beats and melody that she surrounds it with… Essential” – DJ Mag
“Cool AND slick, like lightspeed cracks through thin ice – and she’s not just skating on top, she’s turning triple axels, and grinning like its nothing at all” – Plan B Magazine
